VSJF Sustainable Agriculture Grants and Projects
VSJF is pleased to have supported an eclectic mix of sustainable agriculture organizations, projects, and studies.

- Composting Association of Vermont: $15,000 grant used to help this new industry association complete their strategic planning and membership development activities.
- Intervale Foundation: Three separate grants, totaling $27,125, were used by the Intervale to investigate the feasibility of developing an Eco-Park, growing mushrooms with brewery waste, and creating an agritourism site.
- Northeast Organic Farming Association - VT: Community Supported Agriculture: Two grants totaling $20,000 were used by NOFA to develop a statewide community supported agriculture network.
- Northeast Organic Farming Association - VT: Organic Seed Production TA Program: Two grants totaling $19,120 were used by NOFA to run an organic seed producers training program.
- University of Vermont Center for Sustainable Agriculture: A $5,000 grant was used to study the feasibility of growing organic barley and producing organic malted barley and malt syrup in Vermont. A $12,200 grant was used to improve the bookkeeping and record keeping systems of small dairy producers. And a $98,089 Vermont Biofuels Initiative grant is being used to run the On-farm Seed Oil Production and Feasibility Study.
- Vermont Cheese Council: $37,000 in grants were used to develop an association of Vermont cheese makers in order to market their products , share technical assistance with each other, and develop quality standards for Vermont cheeses using the Council’s label.
- Vermont Food Venture Center: A $1,400 grant was used to provide scholarships to new and experienced farmers to offset costs of participating in a Vermont Food Venture Center agricultural business development program.
- Vermont Fresh Network: $30,000 grant used to hire part-time staff, facilitate and write strategic plan, write newsletters, produce a resource manual, create a website, & run a radio campaign.
- Vermont Maple Industry Council: A $15,000 grant was used to initiate an industry-wide strategic/marketing plan and to review and revise the operations of maple industry organizations in order to effectively implement this plan.
- Vermont Prime Emu Producers, Inc. A $5,000 grant to VPEP was used used to support the marketing of emu products, including website updates, logo design, & nutritional label development.
- Vermont Quality Meats Cooperative Several grants, totaling $40,000, were used by VQM to formally organize as a cooperative, to purchase a vehicle with a refrigerated unit and storage equipment, and to assist with marketing.
- Vermont Specialty Food Association A $5,000 grant was used to help the association develop a strategy to enhance the viability and competitiveness of VSFA members, and lead to the creation and/or improvement of jobs within VSFA’s member businesses.
